Basalt is a rock, and rocks are not generally known to be particularly lightweight, but there's more to it: according to Gitzo, the basalt is ground into sand, melted, made into fibres, and woven into a composite leg, kind of like carbon fibre. Actually, it's more like fibreglass. Actually, that sounds exactly like fibreglass. It might just be fibreglass. But whatever it is,
