Both weft and warp threads are rope dyed in indigo before weaving, and the Wabash pattern is then bleached out of the finished fabric. This gives the black fabric a beautiful, faded look, and the dots won't fade. The classic Wabash pattern originated in the work clothes of railway workers in the 1930s and 40s.
